Wonder if walnuts count...

According to my trusty Farmers' Almanac, the following are signs of a sure-fire cold winter:
  • Geese fly south at a high altitude.
  • Oak trees bear many acorns.
  • Chipmunks are abundant.
  • Lakes and rivers freeze later than usual.
  • Onions grow thicker skins than usual.
  • Squirrels are gathering a large supply of nuts.
  • Woodpeckers appear early.
  • Lots of berries.
  • Corn husks are thicker and stronger.
Given our surplus of wacky walnuts, and the squirrels to go with them, I'm wondering if I need to spend a few more days at the woodpile.

thanks for the reminder to plant my pansies and bulbs to cheer me through the cold winter and surprise me when it warms up again!

Silly almanac. Everyone knows that thicker corn husks are a sign of improperly moisturized feet, not a cold winter.
