I came across this the other day. Amazing.

I'd been wondering for a few months who had done the lovely "SALE" lettering in the Crabtree & Evelyn emails that popped up in my inbox, never knowing it was the same fantastic handlettering artist who created one of my favorite book covers that I've ever seen (above)... so when twig and thistle's valentine post popped up last month, I bolted to Sarah Coleman's site inkymole. Beautiful, prolific, detailed, varied, amazing. I could spend hours here.

If I were made of cash.

Yes, it's that Colosseum. Made painstakingly out of type. And then lovingly printed and signed. See the little bird, made of two parentheses?.... sigh. Watch the video of its making. This is worth every penny from this fellow's e-shop. I may have to beg.

Letters everywhere...

I've always loved letters and alphabets, numbers, fonts... to the point ot being mesmerized by their shapes and forms instead of concentrating on how they were to be used during Algebra class (sorry, Mrs. ??). Lately I've noticed a little trend of flash cards and alphabets, mainly for kids' room decor, but also for grownups as well, around the web. On our trip home last week we spotted some fun typography from the last century which I'll have to post at some point; notably in public school signage that must have all been created around the same time, as they all emply a standard cut metal (aluminum likely) Futura all cap. Yesterday here in Nashville I spotted the same on a public school wall over off Chestnut. A great look. Anyhow, here are a few fun letter-related links. I'd love to try my hand at creating some, in many different languages.

DesignSponge is the font of much interesting artistry, but I especially loved this guest post on Handletterers. Enjoy! I know I did, after a huge reality check. I thought I could do this...til I see folks like Alison Carmichel, Sarah Watts, and the other folks on this site. Wow.

Type for Christmas.

These are gorgeous. You can read a lot of interesting [well, some geeks like me think so] tidbits about early typesetting here. These particular blocks are 500 years old! One quarter of the time since the first Christmas, plus they look Christmasy, I think. Ye olde block letters. Lovely.

Q&A: Stefan G. Bucher Interviews Doyald Young --

This STEP interview with type designer Doyald Young is fantastic. What an inspiring and talented fellow, and cute: he looks a little like Walter Matthau. His font Eclat is one of my favorites as it's German poster-inspired.
